How it worksShow guide

Introduction

Calculate GST (or similar sales tax) either by adding tax to a net price or by extracting tax from an inclusive price.

Formula

When the amount excludes GST, tax is a percentage of the base. When the amount includes GST, tax is extracted using rate ÷ (100 + rate).

exclusive:GST=Ar100inclusive:GST=Ar100+r\mathrm{exclusive:} GST = A\cdot\tfrac{r}{100}\quad\mathrm{inclusive:} GST = A\cdot\tfrac{r}{100+r}
  • A Entered amount
  • r GST rate (%)
  • GST Tax component

Step-by-step

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Enter the GST rate as a percent.
  3. Choose exclusive (amount before tax) or inclusive (amount already taxed).
  4. Review GST, net, and gross figures.

Worked example

On a $1,000 exclusive amount at 18% GST, tax is $180 and the gross total is $1,180.

Use cases

  • Add GST to a quoted ex-tax price
  • Find tax already included in a bill total
  • Check invoices at common rates (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%)
