Introduction

Estimate how many plants fit in a field from area and spacing between rows and plants.

Formula

Plant count is field area divided by the product of row spacing and plant spacing (same units).

N=ArpN = \frac{A}{r \cdot p}
  • A Field area
  • r Row spacing
  • p In-row plant spacing
  • N Estimated number of plants

Step-by-step

  1. Enter field area and unit.
  2. Enter row spacing in centimetres.
  3. Enter in-row plant spacing in centimetres.

Worked example

1 ha with 75 cm rows and 25 cm plant spacing holds about 53,333 plants (~53,333/ha).

Use cases

  • Plan nursery transplant counts
  • Check seed packet needs for given spacing
  • Compare density options before sowing

Frequently asked questions
